HERBALIST-FORMULATED
BOD CARE

Fat and the Moon was founded in 2012 by herbalist Rachel Budde. Rachel started formulating head-to-toe bod care products in her Brooklyn kitchen, and the seed of Fat and the Moon was germinated. We’ve grown to a team of 20 now, all under one roof in Nevada City, CA and we still handmake each of our products. Our vision is to turn regimen into ritual by honoring the time tested ability of plants to heal and restore our bodies. We envision our products as herbal gateways which align our care for ourselves and our care for the earth.

Our potions reflect the world we want to live in, which is why we consciously source local, organic and fairly traded ingredients, perpetually evolve our low waste packaging, handcraft our products to the highest quality standards, and only use inclusive, body affirming messaging. Toxic ‘anti-aging’ language, be gone!

It is Fat and the Moon’s mission to create a thriving culture of Self Care which taps the true source of wellbeing: social and ecosystemic harmony.

FROM THE FOUNDER

Hey Friends,

What an honor to have you here. Fat and the Moon is the place we get to meet, as real deal bodies, as plant people, and as people seeking alternatives to toxic paradigms. We need each other to be supported, and to stay inspired.

As an herbalist, I have a passion for plant bodies and human bodies, and how they synergize. I see the skin as the organ of our edge- the place where we meet the world, and feel the pain and pleasure of existence. Our edges are the places we grow and change.

My deepest intention with Fat and the Moon, is to provide intentionally made potions to support that fertile and feeling edge.

With love,
Rachel

OUR TEAM

Fat and the Moon is an entity: her bones are a business, and her soul and spirit are sculpted by the magic hands and hearts of the folks that call FM their J-O-B. ⁣

Along with our founding herbalist, our team consists of bakers, artists, film makers, photographers, ceramicists, musicians, activists, perfumers, and gardeners— to name a few.

⁣⁣Our labor births Fat and the Moon everyday. Intention is a key ingredient. ⁣⁣

When you throw down your hard earned dollars for a FM potion, you broadcast a message that you value the labor, and the love behind all things.⁣ We are a handmade-to-order business.

Translation: we are not Amazon. Please cultivate patience, doing so gives the whole world a little peace. Convenience cloaks hidden costs.

WHATS IN A NAME

People often ask about where the name Fat and the Moon comes from. The word 'fat' is not always embraced in our culture, especially within the context of bod and beauty care products.

Yet, when our founder Rachel considered her influences at the beginning stages of concocting body care potions, fat was an obvious muse. Fat is the medium for external herbal medicine. Fat absorbs the medicinal constituents of plants so we can apply them to our skin. Not only does fat (as in the myriad plant oils) suspend the properties of plants, it has healing properties all on its own. ⁣When we use herb infused fats on our skin, we feed ourselves a nutrient-dense meal.

⁣Our name also is an ode to the Moon, as it has a profound effect on life on this planet; especially as all life is animated by water. Water makes up most of our bodies and the bodies of plants. The health and vitality of each cell of our being is completely dependent on water. No water, no life. The movement of water, as we see in the tides, is in a perpetual dance with the Moon. Fat and water need a spiral movement to mix; in the movement, there is creamy cohesion, interplay, and the joining of forces.

That, dear friends, is why Fat and the Moon.⁣
